Lactose-Free Vanilla Milkshake

Lactose-Free Vanilla Milkshake

June 20: National Vanilla Milkshake Day

Holy cow! Islander is ecstatic that she can enjoy a classic vanilla milkshake now that she has found some lactose-free ingredients at the local grocery store. She used to take a dietary supplement before digesting dairy to prevent discomfort from mild lactose intolerance, but it didn’t really work on her delicate system and had to avoid some creamy and cheesy foods altogether. The recipe for vanilla milkshake below still can be made with regular ice cream and milk. But with special lactose-free ingredients, it makes it more meaningful for her to be able to celebrate National Vanilla Milkshake Day! Yay!

  • The Breyer’s brand vanilla ice cream is 99% lactose-free, so 1% may still affect those with extremely delicate digestive systems.
  • We have used soy ice cream and soy milk products before but Islander prefers the taste of real dairy.
  • Sometimes we omit or reduce the amount of sugar in this recipe as the vanilla ice cream is already sweet enough on its own.
  • Thanks to Lisa L. for the vanilla extract from the Big Island of Hawaii. HI Cookery is running out and needs to get some more!
  • Top the vanilla milkshake with (non-dairy) whipped cream and garnish with a maraschino cherry (optional).
